The City of Tacoma owns and operates two senior activity centers, Beacon Activity Center in the downtown area and Lighthouse Activity Center on the east side. The centers provide a comprehensive array of programs designed to improve and maintain health, stimulate learning, and provide socialization, recreational, and volunteer opportunities for people age 50 and older. The Tacoma City Council created the standing committees to explore new policy recommendations and develop recommendations to the full City Council. Each Council Committee is composed of four Council Members and an alternate appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Council, and each chair and vice-chair are selected by their respective committee.
The Community Policing Division, under the command of Captain Shawn Stringer, is responsible for coordinating proactive policing of the City in partnership with the community. The Community Policing Division is comprised of four Sector Lieutenants and 16 Community Liaison Officers, the Gang Unit, the School Resource Unit, and the Animal Control Unit.
